The story
In 1910, Enea and Maria Gandola left Bellagio, on the other side of the lake, with their three children and a big idea. In the quiet village of Tremezzo they opened a grand Art Nouveau hotel, built for the wealthy travellers then arriving on Lake Como from all over Europe.
The yellow palace stands right on the shore, looking straight across the water at the Bellagio peninsula. Over the decades it added gardens, terraces and lakeside lidos, and became one of the classic addresses of the central lake.
Today the hotel is run by the De Santis family. They turned the 18th-century Villa Emilia next door into the T Spa, added a pool that floats on the lake, and brought in the cooking of Gualtiero Marchesi, the master of modern Italian cuisine, whose signature dishes are still served at La Terrazza.
